Oil Pulling

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic method for detox and rejuvenation. It’s a simple practice, with remarkable results. I first began this practice of oil pulling at home while encouraging my brother to do the same to assist him in healing from an aggressive dis-ease. Being his older sister, I found this a great opportunity to give him healing directions for the day while his mouth was occupied ( just a little brother/sister humor).

What exactly is oil pulling? What does it do?

To start, simply swish your choice of unrefined, high quality oil in your mouth; similar to the way you would use a mouthwash. I like using coconut oil. 20 minutes of swishing is ideal. This process attracts and removes bacteria, toxins, and parasites that live in your mouth and lymph system, and also pulls congestion and mucus from your throat and loosens up your sinuses. With the help of your saliva, the activation of removing them begins. Pulling also helps re-mineralize your teeth and strengthen your gums by thoroughly cleansing the area.

Traditionally, oil pullers used virgin sesame oil. The reason I prefer to use raw coconut oil is because it has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and enzymatic properties. This provides the added benefit of killing any unwanted bacteria that may be residing in the mouth, while leaving behind healthy probiotic strains. A perfect exchange!

To start, scoop ½ to 1 full tablespoon of oil into the mouth; if it’s cold, allow the oil to melt. Now push, swirl, and pull the oil between your teeth, around your gums, and allow it to touch every part of your mouth except your throat. It's just like when you swish water between the teeth to remove a lodged food particle. You don’t want the oil getting in contact with your throat because it’s now carrying somewhat toxic material. Resist gargling and don't swallow. If it becomes too much, spit it out and begin again.

It's a great time to practice deep breathing through your nose. Allow this to be a sacred time or get busy. I make the bed, feed the dog,(and give him his daily dose of coconut oil as well), get dressed, empty the dish washer and check email. Those 20 minutes will fly by.

Once your time pulling is over, spit into the trash as it will clog the drain pipes if it solidifies. Rinse your mouth out with clean water two or three times. Floss. Brush your teeth with non-flourinated toothpaste and I rinse with a xylitol mouthwash. Finally, drink a glass of water and your mouth is now super clean and kissable!

So why would someone practice oil pulling? Often it is recommended to clients with mouth, gum and teeth issues and those who desire to find relief from congestion in the sinuses and throat. Those clients living with any toxic condition including cancer and candida have experienced benefits. There are some who have found their skin to clear and become supple.

Oil pulling can be done at any time of the day, but for a more thorough detox, its best to do this in the morning, before eating or drinking. It's a great way to start the day.
